How We Build Sidewalks and Walkways

Quality flatwork starts with proper planning and site preparation. We do not just pour concrete and hope it works out. We take the time to do the prep work that prevents future problems.

Our walkway installation process

First, we mark out the path and excavate the area. We remove grass, roots, and unstable soil. Then we grade the area and add a compacted gravel base. This base is critical because it prevents the concrete from settling unevenly.

We pay close attention to drainage and slope. Walkways need to shed water, not collect it. We create a slight slope away from buildings and toward drainage areas. This prevents water pooling and ice formation in winter.

Next, we build forms to define the edges and pour the concrete. Standard walkways are 4 inches thick and 36 to 48 inches wide. We install control joints every 4 to 5 feet to control where cracks form. We finish the surface with a broom texture for slip resistance.

After the pour, we cure the concrete properly to ensure maximum strength. You can usually walk on new concrete after 24 to 48 hours, but we recommend waiting a week before heavy use.
